The Radleys

Paris is where Will Radley and Helen Radley’s relationship begins in the 1992 night of their meeting and Helen’s conversion. It becomes more than a point on a map: seventeen years later, Will describes himself as still caught in that night, and his appeal to return there gives the city the force of a shared past he has never managed to leave behind.

The Night That Defines Paris

The evidence identifies Paris as the setting of Will and Helen’s meeting and Helen’s conversion. That beginning gives the city a lasting place in their relationship: when Will later speaks of the night, he presents it not as a finished episode but as the moment around which his subsequent life has continued to turn.

Seventeen Years of Remembrance

Will says that for seventeen years he has been walking around the same night in Paris. He says he would have returned, but there was never an invitation; he also resisted the prospect of going back only to occupy second place. His account makes absence part of the city’s significance: Paris is both the scene of their past closeness and a place he has stayed away from while remaining emotionally fixed on it. He describes keeping his distance as requiring sustained effort and seeking blood from others, without suggesting that this could make him forget Helen.

A Proposed Return

During the confrontation that brings their shared history into the present, Will invites Helen to go to Paris and relive the magic, offering an alternative of aiming for the moon. The proposal recasts the city as a possible return to the origin of their bond, rather than merely a location recalled in conversation. As he carries Helen upward, the house grows smaller below them; the scene establishes the invitation and their departure into the air, but does not confirm that they arrive in Paris.
